By Sam Laskaris Writer There was some Indigenous representation at this year’s Scotties Tournament of Hearts. And when all was said and done at the 10-day national women’s curling championships, it was Métis curler Kerri Einarson and her teammates who were celebrating a title. For Einarson, this was the fifth time she had captured the national tourney, often simply called The Scotties. Einarson and her teammates, finalists at last year’s nationals, entered the 2026 tourney as Team Canada. They were awarded that spot as last year’s champs, skipped by Rachel Homan, did not take part in this year’s event as

Mother of accused killer tells trial he sent cryptic messages after shooting - The Turtle Island News

By Brittany Hobson The mother of an accused mass killer testified she witnessed her son experience bouts of paranoia and that he sent her cryptic messages in the days following a shooting that claimed the lives of five people at a Winnipeg rooming house. Mary Felix told court Thursday that she provided screenshots of her conversation with her son, Jamie Felix, to police after the killings because she believed he could be involved. “I heard that he was over there, so that’s why I called the police,” she said. “Were you worried about him?” Crown prosecutor Chantal Boutin asked. “Yes, I was,” replied Mary Felix. Court heard that her 35-year-old son struggled with drug and alcohol addiction after the death of his twin brother, who was killed when he was

Family learned of SIU's fatal shooting findings through social media: FirstNations - The Turtle Island News

By Maan Alhmidi Ontario First Nations leaders are expressing “serious concerns” about the release of a police watchdog’s report into the fatal shooting of a man in a northern Ontario courtroom, saying the family and the community were left to find out crucial details through social media. Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler and Wapekeka First Nation Chief Brennan Sainnawap say a “strongly worded” letter was sent to Special Investigations Unit Director Joseph Martino and Ontario Attorney General Doug Downey about the case and what they call a “broader pattern of systemic failings towards First Nations people.” They say last week’s SIU report into the death of Tyresse Roundsky, who was fatally shot by a provincial police officer inside a makeshift courtroom in Wapekeka First Nation last July, was

By Crystal Greene, Local Journalism Initiative reporter, IndigiNews Eishia Hudson, a 16-year-old member of Berens River First Nation in ‘Manitoba,’ was fatally shot by a Winnipeg police officer in 2020. Holding up an eagle feather, the father of Eishia Hudson — a teenage girl killed by Winnipeg police officers six years ago — remembered his daughter as “loved beyond words, missed beyond measure.” William Hudson, the late teen’s father, gave an emotional opening statement earlier this month at the start of an inquest into the circumstances of her 2020 shooting. The inquest launched with ceremonial protocols and drumming. Hudson spoke of his daughter’s impact, pausing at times to compose himself from emotionally breaking down during his appearance. “The dreams she would’ve chased in her life, she deserved to live,” he

Double murder, suicide in western Quebec First Nation, provincial police say - The Turtle Island News

Quebec provincial police say a father fatally shot his two children before taking his own life in a First Nation community in the province’s western region. Provincial police say local officers in the community of Kitigan Zibi were called to a home around 2:15 a.m. where they found the three people. Sgt. Nancy Fournier says a firearm was used by the father, who was 41-years-old and the two children were aged 10 and 12. Local police say the victims are all members of Kitigan Zibi, an Algonquin First Nation community northwest of Ottawa. Earlier, provincial police said one of the three was declared dead at the scene and the other two were taken to hospital where their deaths were confirmed. Quebec Premier François Legault, Public Security Minister Ian Lafrenière and
